This past monday we decided to put our dog (son) Oliver to sleep. He was 10, had an ear infection, a large tumor growing under his left ear, skin allergies, and cancer. It was a hard decision but a wise one. We wanted to let him go as long as he could, but in the end I think that was selfish on our part, just not wanting to let go. The last few nights we notice he could not get a good night sleep he would constantly walk around to find a comfortable spot, sometimes disoriented walking into walls. He also slowly start losing control over his bladder urinating up to two or three times on the floor in one night. Because of his ear infection he had a strong odor which I'm finding that I am missing, who knew the thought of a strong odor would make you have such wonderful memories. If all dogs go to heaven, the angels owe us BIG time. To Oliver you will be missed but not forgotten.

I 've never been to Coney Island, New York. It wasn't what I thought it would be kinda deserted, but I'm glad to have experienced it. I even got the chance to eat a chili dog from Nathan's, pretty tasty. Here's a few images out of many I took.

Betelhem's Modeling Debut

I've been doing a lot of Photographing. Shooting Models, Food, Landscapes, Old Houses, Churches, etc. etc. . But my favorite is photographing Children. Recently I got the pleasure of meeting Ms. Betelhem Lowe. The daughter of John & Ikeda Lowe here in Savannah, GA. The day I went to her house for the shoot, she started off kinda of shy. When I mention I had cupcakes and balloons for her the deal was on. We shot in her backyard on a day that was very hot due to direct sun light, so I cut the session short. Here are a few from that day. Also be on the look out for Betelhem in some of my upcoming paintings.

The Return of the Jedi

Finally I'm back, to be honest I don't know where I went. But I do know I experience my first what some would call being "Burnt Out". One of my problems is I'm always saying yes to people, when it comes to my art. I'm o.k. with that except I stock pile too much at one time, then I find myself forgetting what I agreed to do in the first place. I'm learning now to pace myself and to spread myself out evenly, allow space between each project. I apologize to everyone on the receiving end, blame it on my head and not my heart. I'm not going to keep rambling , just know I back and I'm human ( which I'm just figuring out myself ). The cape has been folded, place in a box and stored away.

Here's one of the pictures I took while I was in NYC for a solo show at Dillon Gallery. I chose this picture to post, because it kind of reminds me of how I felt during my burnt out period.

I've been meaning to post this photo for some while now. I got it from this savage place in Savannah. I often wonder how can people throw away or have no interests in their family pictures. Maybe I'm the opposite because my family didn't take as many photos. I've always been envious of people who have loads of family pictures, and the ones with the home videos just blows my mind.

Here's some pictures I took at my favorite Bakery. "Back in the Day Bakery" in Savannah, GA. It was fun shooting, also seeing what really goes on behind the scene. I would've never thought they did so much work in one day. It makes you appreciate ever bite of those delicious cupcakes and sandwiches. To Cheryl & Griff I say that's for the experience, one I will not forget.

As I was driving from an area where I was taking pictures of shrimp boats, I notice this building with this nice lettering covering the walls . I made a u-turn, and pulled in the parking lot. When I got out the car I came across a man. I asked him was he the owner, he said no. He pointed at the door and said the owner was inside. I went inside asked could I take photos of the outside of building, he said yes. I started taking pictures, as I did, the guy from earlier walked over to a smoker and started adding wood to it. I've always been fascinated with large smokers (grills), my uncle in Thomaston always grilled. I could remember the taste of the meat, it had a smoky flavor that I was in love with. I asked the guy could I take photos of him managing the fire, he said sure. I took a couple and said thanks as I walk off he said, I'm about to put the meat in, do you want photos of that ? Inside my head I was like, "Hell Yeah !!". My mouth was watering the entire time. These are some of the photos from that encounter, and to that young man, who's name is Fuzzy, I say thanks.

Paris was nice. I'm going to to be posting some pictures. Keep in mind I was there for a solo show with Galarie Nordine Zidoun (four days). So I didn't get to see as much as I would've liked. I was very impressed with the Architecture. The buildings were breathtaking and the statues were amazing. Here's a few.

Here's a painting that will be in a small museum show here in Savannah, GA. The show is February 8 at the Beach Institute. This is one of my "What If" paintings. Every time I look at the Morton Salt box I wonder if there were a black pepper box, what would it look like? So this is one of a few versions I've painted. Who knows maybe I'll get that call from Morton (smile). The painting is 36 x 24 inches on canvas.

Bert Williams (November 12, 1875 - March 4, 1922)

Egbert Austin Williams, was the pre-eminent Black Entertainer of his era and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time. He was by far the best -selling black recording artist before 1920.

Williams was a key figure in the development of African American music. In an age when racial inequality and stereotyping were an accepted part of life, he became the first black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage, and did much to push back racial barriers during his career. Fellow vaudevillian W.C. Fields, who appeared in productions with williams, described him as "the funniest man I ever saw-and the saddest man I ever knew".

Williams was born in Sweetes, Antigua, and at the age of 10 was brought to New York City by his parents. From New York City the family moved to Riverside, California, where Williams graduated from Riverside High School. He later went to San Francisco, intending to study to be a civil engineer, but instead joined a minstrel company known as "The Mastoden Minstrels", which played the lumber and mining camps of California. In 1893, in San Francisco he formed the team of Williams and Walker, his partner being equally celebrated straight man George Walker.

"The Black Man's Country Club"

I use to be a Barber. I did it for thirteen years. During that time I saw so much. In a Barber Shop you here it all, talks of politics, sex, religion, sports, food, advice about marriage, and advice about divorce. We had all types of people from all walks of life. I'm talking Preachers, Pimps, Drug Dealers, Politicians, Police Officers, Chefs, Athletes, Muslims, Christians, Celebrities, Artists, Authors, the list goes on and on. The shop is where I ran into a person who would help influence me in a major way. I was cutting his hair and over heard him tell someone on his cell phone to meet him at his studio. I assume he meant a music studio. I asked him what type of music he did, he said I listen to jazz, but I'm not a musician I'm a Artist, I paint. He invited me to his studio, I was blown away by his paintings. But what really took it over the top was the fact he was self-taught. After leaving his studio I went to painting, I told the guys at the barber shop I was leaving. I took a leap of fate and that was the starting point of my art career. That artist whom I'm speaking of was William Tolliver. When I think back if it wasn't for the Barber Shop, I wouldn't be typing even this blog. It was a fascinating experience, one I will never forget. So to all my ex-customers all the fellow barbers I've worked with (Tom, Bill, Brian, Derrick, Kid, John, Doreen, Roy, and Carla), I say thank you. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

December 25, 2008 a legend passed. Eartha Kitt (the original Catwoman & Material Girl). If you Google her you will see how this woman came from the direst of circumstances to the rise of a major actor, singer, dancer, and activist of her time. Rest in Peace Ms Kitty.

My grandmother was and still is a big influence in my life. I use to go to church with her in a small town called Thomaston, GA. I remember sitting in the pew with a pocket full of peppermint candy while she stood at the entrance of the church. She wore a white uniform with white gloves, white shoes and a silver ribbon pinned to her with the words Usher. The church didn't have central air and it would get scorching hot. The flies were terrible and some of the times the water fountain in front didn't work. Everyone would fan themselves with these paper fans with the image of Martin Luther King or Jesus on the front. I never knew the words to any of the hymns that were sung, and still today I couldn't sing you a verse. But the feeling that I got back then when the choir sang , even as a kid made the hairs on the back of my neck raise. I thought it was the Holy Ghost touching me. From time to time I would be a little mischievous horse playing with my cousins. We would laugh at the way the Preacher spoke. When he preached he would sometimes make this sound as if he had the hiccups. My grandmother would see us laughing. She had a way of gritting her teeth to let you know you were going to get it when you got home. Believe me when I say I had my share of whippings, but I know in the end it was all out of LOVE. So as a tribute to Catherine Smith I've taken photographs of small country churches that reminds me of the small church she attended. It's an ongoing project, here's a few. Hope you enjoy them as I enjoyed photographing them. Sometimes while I'm shooting I can here the old choir sing and then I break out into my Reverend Strickland imitation minus the hiccup and say, "Praise the Lawd, Praise the Lawd !!!!!"

Two Gorillas to go !!

Well I finally finish the paintings for the show in Paris totaling 18. The truck came to pick up the work, they will drive them to NYC, crate them then ship to Paris. I felt like this Silverback Gorilla just jump off my shoulder. Now I have to work on getting the other two gorillas of my shoulders too. Lately I've been getting inspired by images of vintage sports and circus photos. I've already started incorporating them in my paintings, also I'm working on something interesting I will release on a later date. Christmas Eve, I guess Santa's elves aren't the only ones working in the middle of the night. Merry Christmas to all, hope the economy doesn't have everyone down, let's get back to what Christmas really means, being surrounded by people you love and giving praise for what you do have.

As a tribute to myself going grey, I've been working on a series of men who are Grey. This is a series I will be working on for about three years. So far it's been a treat, not only capturing great images, but also hearing great stories in the process. I understand what they mean by Grey as a sign of wisdom. I would never think about dyeing my hair, but if I did have a choice in the matter, I would rather be totally grey then Salt & Pepper. Giving me that Moses look, now if I could only find those Stone Tablets.

Weekend Treat

Thanks to James Hunt of The Hunt Club Clothiers (Savannah, GA), Autumn and I went to a Polo Match in Bluffton, SC, sunday. You would've thought I been to one before as much as I am into POLO the brand. It was cold the day of, but was a great treat. Saturday we went inside @Home (see link) and the owner Liz (sweet lady) showed me a tricycle I couldn't resist. Both businesses I highly recommend.
